Proof impression on Kelmscott paper (with Morris's "perch" watermark) of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 114, "The Wife of Bath's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower right.
First or early state of Hooper's wood engraving, with a solid line running the length of the upper half of the knight's tunic sleeve.
