Touched proof impression on laid paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 60, "The Prioresses Tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower right.
Intermediary state of Hooper's wood engraving, with the detail removed from the Virgin's halo, but before the background was retouched.
