Notes
First American edition (unauthorized).
A pirated edition of Ulysses, purporting to be the 9th printing (May 1927) of the Shakespeare and Company edition, printed in Dijon, France.
"Among the many points in which this piracy differs from the legitimate ninth printing are the misprint 'Jonthan' for 'Jonathan' (p. [2]), the reversal of the position of the fly title and divisional numeral I, the absence of title and author on the spine, and a very large number of typographical errors. On p. 323 of this piracy, for example, l. 29 of the legitimate edition is inverted and inserted as the third line from the bottom. ... This pirated edition ... was printed by Adolph and Rudolph Loewinger, 230 West 17th St., New York, for Samuel Roth ... and his brother Max Roth. It was unauthorized by Joyce and sold illegally in the United States. Many copies of this piracy were seized by the Society for the Suppression of Vice on October 5, 1929"--Slocum and Cahoon.
