Title from Everyday life in Holland's golden age (catalogue of the complete etchings of Adriaen van Ostade by S.W. Pelletier & L.J. Slatke).
Signed by the atist on chimney at upper right "Av. Ostade" and dated "1653".
State IV, as described by Hollstein, with the addition of the skull cap on the man's head, but before the addition of the fine lines in the shadows visible on the hem of the man's apron.
Mounted as item 45 into an album of 63 etchings by van Ostade, evidently created by collecter Achille Seilliere (PML 4350).
Library's copy trimmed within plate mark.

Initialed "AV: O:" in pen and ink at bottom right; with a note by former owner in pencil on sheet below mounted print: Adriaen van Ostade. Rare épreuve tirée avant que le mur, derrière la tête du paysan, n'ait été [...], et avant le travail très serré à la pointe sèche, produisant l'effet de la maniere noire, dans les parties ombrées.
