Notes
Individual plates comprising this suite have been cataloged separately.
Set of 33 plates chiefly depicting topographical views of Versailles. 31 of the prints included here were published in Leiden by Pierre Vander Aa as part of a suite of 36 plates which appeared as "tome second" of six parts depicting France, and comprising, in turn, parts 4-9 of his monumental series of etched plates issued in 66 parts, which included topographical views of the principal towns and cities of the world, and was published under the general title La galerie agréable du monde, où l'on voit en un grand nombre de cartes très exactes et de belles tailles douces les principaux empires, roïaumes, républiques, provinces, villes, bourgs et forteresses ... dans les quatre parties de l'univers; the plates comprising the Morgan Library copy represent a different state of the prints originally issued by Aa, lacking the separately printed decorative engraved borders, and, in some instances, showing signs of damage or wear suggesting that the prints may be later impressions.
Description of Library's copy, including titles and suggested imprint information, based in part on comparison with the BnF copy of Pierre Vander Aa's: La Galerie agréable du monde , où l'on voit en un grand nombre de cartes très exactes et de belles tailles douces les principaux empires, roïaumes, républiques, provinces, villes, bourgs et forteresses... les îles, côtes, rivières, ports de mer... les antiquitez, les abbayes, églises, académies, collèges, bibliothèques, palais et autres édifices... comme aussi les maisons de campagne, les habillemens et moeurs des peuples... dans les quatre parties de l'univers. Tome second du Roïaume de France (Leiden : Pierre Vander Aa, 1729); descriptions of additional sets suggest that individual copies may vary somewhat in content.
The general title-page included included in part 2 of the 6 parts devoted to France is followed by a separate part-title reading, "Le Roïaume de France, representé en cartes geographique et en tailles-douces. Ou on voit les principales villes, à plain ou de profil; leur situation, & ce ... avec une court explication sous chaque planche ... Tome second. A Leide, Chez Pierre Vander Aa".
Library's copy lacks titles and includes 31 of the 36 plates comprising the suite published by Aa as "tome 2" in a series of 66 numbered parts; lacking plates: "Plan general des ville et chateau de Versailles", "Vue generale des ville chateau et jardins du cote des avenues", and "Plan du Palais du Trianon"; two additional plates are also lacking and have been substituted by different etchings of the same subjects, notably similar in style and size to the rest of the suite, with caption titles reading, "Vue et perspective du chateau et du jardin de Versailles, comme il est apresent", and "Les cours escuries et avenues de Versailles"; the plates in the BnF copy depicting the same subjects and bearing similar captions differ from the other prints in the set in being larger in size and in having engraved borders and imprint statements included in the plate, the latter reading, "Amsterdam Chez Charles Allard sur le Dam ... Avec Privil: de Nosseign: le Etats de Holl: et de Westfr." and "C. Allard excud: Amstelod. ... Cum Privil: Ord: Holl: &c."; Library's copy does include the single letterpress leaf, "Explication des lieux ou sont representées les fables dans le plan du labyrinthe de Versailles", also issued by Aa to accompany the plate depicting a plan of the labyrinth of Versailles, entitled, "Plan du Labirinthe de Versailles";
The first plate in the Library's set, "Vue et perspective du chateau et du jardin de Versailles, comme il est apresent", has been colored by hand and the design has been perforated with pinholes, presumably for pouncing.
