Abbot Placidus Hieber von Greifenfels, his arms; Bibliotheca Lambacensis, stamp; Zacharias Eÿ̈ring, his signature in black ink; from the library of Julia P. Wightman.
Binding
Contemporary brown polished calf. Triple frames stamped in blind: the outer has two rolls of leaves, the middle has five compartments with male and female busts under gothic canopies, and the inner has flowing Renaissance ornaments enclosing birds and human heads. The arms of Abbot Hieber von Greifenfels (1615-1678) tooled in gold and silver with initials PA ZL (Placidus Abt Zu Lambach) was laid on at a later date. The arms has four shields, including the arms of Lambach: a naked girl in a boat. It covers the original panel depicting Justitia holding scales and sword. The title and date MDLXXIIII tooled in blind, were laid on above and below the arms. On the lower cover the frames are similar, although the middle frame has facing heads and no birds. In the center a rectangular compartment with the armorial emblem of the city of Augsburg, a bunch of grapes, flanked by the initials S.M. Above and below this, an impression of a moor's head, and repeated below the neck, the initials S.M. (Mohr?) Goldschmidt speculates the initials may indicate a binder S. Mohr, although Haebler suggests Stephan Mair. Traces of a pair of ties; in modern brown cloth slip-case.
