Notes
"230 wood-cuts, of which 42 are by Bewick."
Prospectus of the work, with colored illustrations (pages [i]-[iv]).
Much of the material appeared first in Hindley's The Catnach press (London, 1869).
"Cartridge Demy 8vo Edition, 25/- 25 copies printed"--Spine.
"The special interest of this copy is in its dust wrapper. It is printed on the reverse of an earlier (but never used) dust wrapper, which must have been waste stock. This other dust wrapper was for vol. III of the Old Book Collector's Miscellany (Reeves and Turner, 1873), which Hindley edited. The Catnach wrapper, with hand-coloring, is attractive. It is designed in the style of an old Catnach broadside, information 'my ready-money customers' 'that there are only 750 copies of the work print-ed and publish-ed viz., namely, that is to say:- 500 copies on crown 8vo, at 12/6 each. 250 copies on demy 8vo, at 25/- each. Ours is one for the latter. L.C. records that their copy reads on its spine label, 'Toned demy 8vo edition, 25/, 200 copies printed.' Our copy reads on its d.w. and spine label, 'Cartridge demy 8vo edition, 25/-. 25 copies printed.' It would appear then that there was several paper stocks used wthin the larger demy issues, but at one price. I do not know whether the smaller crown issued had colored cuts"--Typed slip.
Library's copy housed in blue cloth clamshell box.
