"All 37 illustrations by H.K. Browne were reengraved by Lossing-Barritt, printed separately from the text, and inserted at the front of each number. Each number contained two illustrations, except No. 9, which had one, and Nos. 19 & 20, which also contained a portrait of Dickens by Maclise"--Cf. Smith.
"The publisher used surplus covers from earlier numbers for parts 12-17 and inked the appropriate numerals on them by hand. The work was not popular in parts. No. 12 same wrappers as No. 11 or No. 1; No. 13 same wrappers as No. 3 or No. 11; No. 14 same wrappers as No. 4; No. 15 same wrappers as No. 10 or No. 5; No. 16 same wrappers as No. 6 or No. 10; No. 17 same wrappers as No. 7 or No. 11 or back wrapper only same as No. 8; No. 19 printed but altered in ink to read 'Nos. 19. & 20'"--Cf. Smith.
Library's no. 17 was originally printed as no. 9; no. 16 was originally printed as no. 6; no. 15 was originally printed at no. 5; no. 14 was originally printed as no. 4; no 13 was originally printed as no. 3; and no. 12 was originally printed as no. 11.
