Print shows the old year with his scythe (1862), departing at left, as the new year, portrayed as a young woman, stands with arms folded as she surveys a construction site, marked with a sign reading "Opera", littered with pick axes and broken rocks variously labeled "Prusse", "Question Italienne", "Grece" , "Amerique Nord ... Sud", etc.
