Inscribed by the artist on verso of front fly-leaf: "Quand on a de la veine / La vanité humaine / N'est pas une chose vaine. / Empoche, mon vieux! / A moi-même!!!" apparently dated later by Balthus "Août, 1922." Second inscription by Balthus on half-title page: "À mes deux Chères coeurs si blondes, à Didi et à Bicheli / leur Mitsou / qui s'est égaré chez elles! / Pâques 1929."
