Notes
Illustrations: reproductions of wood engravings originally published under the same title: Bruxelles: A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven et cie, 1868.
Some of the figures have been slightly modified from the images printed in the original publication or, in the case of the figure of the priest in the frontispiece, completely removed; one cut is reversed and appears to now be signed on the block by the engraver Méaulle; most of the images have been trimmed. Presumably, these illustrations after Courbet were photographed on to new blocks and re-engraved by another hand, possibly Fortuné Méaulle.
"Épilogue": p. [31].
