Inscription in unknown hand in pencil on verso of front flyleaf: Mrs. Shute was a close friend of Dodgson the Author, & has told me many details of his life that do not occur in his biography's. She is living at "Timber Cottage" Cookham Dean Berks. This was in 1950 she was then about 98 years. AEV; author's inscription in purple ink on half title page: Mrs. Shute, from the Author, Aug. 27/87.
