Notes
Item no. 145 of a collection of prints by James Sayers (PML 146857); formerly part of an album of mounted prints, now disbound.
Print shows William Petty, Marquis of Lansdowne (the Earl of Shelburne) at left in 'profil perdu,' stooping forward, encouraging a dog with the head of Joseph Jekyll to bark at a bust of William Pitt. The word "Bow" issues from the mouth of Jekyll, who wears a legal wig, bands, and gown. The bust stands on the ground framed in a leafy arbor and regards Jekyll serenely, a contrast with the latter's impudent and insignificant profile. Trees form the background. Cf. George.
