Lithograph first appeared in the Charivari, 16 November 1870 with caption title "Page d'histoire".
Signed in the stone with the artist's initials at lower left and numbered "62" at lower right.
2nd state of 3, with the original caption title removed; one of approximately 30 proof impressions printed on large paper to commemorate the occasion on 2 Jan. 1871 when Daumier dined with Victor Hugo at the latter's invitation following the publication of Daumier's "Page d'histoire". As an additional show of solidarity, the two men signed a number of copies of the specially issued proof of Daumier's lithograph.

Summary
Lithograph executed by Daumier in 1870 to celebrate the publication of the 2nd edition of Victor Hugo's Châtiments following Napoleon III's fall from power. The print shows a copy of Hugo's Châtiments in the guise of a thunderbolt smashing down an eviscerated Napoleonic eagle.
