The print depicts the processes of intaglio printing in a workshop and is one of a series of separately published plates issued by Bosse during the 1640's illustrating the arts and trades of the day.
Library owns the companion print to this etching by Bosse, depicting the interior of a printshop and illustrating the etching and engraving and retailing of copperplates (see PML 196062).

Summary
In the background, an artisan inks a copper plate. At left, another one wipes the ink off the surface of the plate with the palm of the hand and with a cloth. At right, an artisan, a foot on the wheel of the press, operates it, forcing the plate on the bed between the two rollers. Printed sheets are hung up to dry in the background, including three impressions of a Crucifixion.
