Originally a series of 35 scenes (library's copy lacking scenes 1-2 (The nursery - First toys) and 35 (The family circle)) depicting incidents in the life of a squire's son, including: Learning to ride--In the schoolroom--College pranks--Joining the army--Hunting--Cock fighting--Liberation--Gretna Green, etc. Publisher's label (lacking) on verso of first scene, lettered: "Panorama of the progress of human life, fashionably display'd illustrating Shakespeare's ages and giving at the same time the manners, costume, amusements, and the field sports of the English people, the whole illustrative of modern characters in a series of many hundreds of moving figures" (Abbey)
The illustrations are by Henry Thomas Alken, the scenes being miniature adaptations of plates in National Field Sports (Abbey)
