Inscriptions/Markings
Author's presentation inscription to Frederick Cowles on front flyleaf: Frederick Cowles from Algernon Blackwood. This story, the first book I ever wrote, was refused by14 publishers before Macmillan issued it, the way having been prepared by "John Silence" & others. "We cannot expect a large sale", wrote George Macmillan in 1909, "but the book has literary & imaginative qualities which entitle it to a hearing" - a letter I made use of later in "A Prisoner in Fairyland". It still has a small sale (1936). A.B.
