Title from lid of box.
Telescopic, hand-colored, etched peepshow of Rome. It comprises five cut-out panels, numbered R1-5, and a backdrop; the front is the lid of a cartonnage box. They are connected on the vertical sides by bands of accordion-pleated paper.
Viewed through a larger and two smaller holes, cut out from the center and two sides of the lid, the city of Rome is depicted on the backdrop, and lid, with St. Peter's Basilica and the Castel Sant'Angelo in the distance. Via Appia is shown in the foreground with people travelling on foot, horseback, carriage, or donkey towards the distant city. Roman ruins are shown on the side panels.
