Notes
Title devised by cataloger.
Telescopic, hand-colored peep-show of a country scene. It comprises a front cover, backdrop, and two cut-out images, that are connected at top and bottom by bands of accordion-pleated paper.
The image on the front cover shows steps leading up to a gate with a cutout hole through which are viewed musicians playing and people dancing in front of the backdrop of a mountainous landscape with a castle and a river crossed by a bridge. A hunter is aiming at four deer with his bow and arrow.
The set has no text or numbering, but the style and quality of the etchings resemble those of late 18th and early 19th century German medium-size peepshows which were initially produced by the firm of Martin Engelbrecht in Augsburg and later reinvented for the mass market. The accordion-band suspension of the later sets eliminated the need for a viewing box.
