Notes
Title and imprint from front cover of peepshow.
Telescopic peep-show of the Thames Tunnel: It comprises hand-colored front cover, backdrop, and five cut-out, arched images of the tunnel that are viewed through an oval hole, cut out from the center of the front cover. Through the arches are viewed pedestrians, horsemen, carriages, and two staircases, down which passengers would descend from street level. The front cover, arches, and backdrop are connected at top and bottom by bands of accordion pleated paper. A two piece hand-colored vignette of ships sailing on the Thames, is mounted on the top and bottom band's first fold and moves out of view when the peep-show is stretched open.
Between 1825 and the 1860s, a number of perspective views were produced and sold as souvenirs for this major tourist attraction, even before the opening of the Tunnel in 1843.
