Collection of 9 progressive working proofs on chine collé of an engraved vignette by J.C. Allen after J.M.W. Turner entitled "Lowestoffe Lighthouse", including etched states and 3 touched proofs with corrections by Turner; according to Rawlinson, the engraving is one an unpublished group of 5 plates and 3 vignettes after drawings by Turner formerly in the posession of Thomas Holloway (1800-1883) and erroneously identified in previous sources under the title "Holloway's Continuation of 'England and Wales.'" Cf. Rawlinson, page 169-173.
Plates 1-8 are preliminary states, with "Drawn by J.M.W. Turner" scratched en pointe at lower left, and "Etched by J.C. Allen" at lower right; plate 9 is an impression of the finished state, with "RA" added to Turner's name and "Engraved by J.C. Allen" at left.
Plate 1 is a preliminary etching, plates 3 and 5 touched with white chalk, plate 7 touched with white and pencil, scratched with a penknife to pick-out areas to be lightened, and annotated with directions to the engraver in Turner's hand.
