Plates 1 and 6 lettered below image: Invented Painted & Published by Wm Hogarth ... Engraved by G. Scotin According to Act of Parliament April 1st 1745; plates 2-3 engraved by B. Baron; plates 4-5 engraved by R.F. Ravenet.
Series of plates originally published in 1745, with subsequent reissues of reimpressions from the original copperplates published during the artist's lifetime and thereafter; these impressions are the later states issued by Hogarth as described by Paulson, showing the various changes made to the plates by him during his lifetime and prior to the changes attributed by Paulson to Boydell and Heath.
Set forms part of an album (PML 146851) that is one of three containing the collected works of William Hogarth; evidently comprised of prints issued by the artist's widow and compiled no earlier than 1781 (see PML 146851-53).
Library's copy bound into an album, with the bound plates preceded by a leaf bearing a mounted leather label with the title of the series tooled in gilt.
