A late, posthumous state of Hogarth's self portrait, with a series of revisions and alterations having been made to the plate originally published by Hogarth in 1758, and a new caption title stating the year of the artist's death. Cf. Paulson.
"In this form the print was sold as frontispiece to bound volumes of Hogarth's prints - a practice Mrs. Hogarth continued long after his death."--Paulson, p. 238.
Print forms part of an album (PML 146851) that is one of three containing the collected works of William Hogarth; evidently comprised of prints reissued by the artist's widow and compiled no earlier than 1781 (see PML 146851-53).

Summary
Self-portrait of Hogarth painting the Comic Muse, after the painting in the National Portrait Gallery; the artist is seated looking to right, wearing an indoor cap and a loose coat, he holds a palette, brushes and palette knife while a pot of oil is on the floor beside the chair; in a niche in the wall behind the easel is a volume of prints and a burin; leaning against the leg of the easel, a copy of the "Analysis of Beauty".
