Summary
Shows two men holding together a safety chain. Both are shown in half figure. The man on the left, shown in profile, examines the chain closely. The other one faces the viewer. He wears a Greek hat and winks towards the viewer as if conveying a message, signal, or suggestion. The caption suggests that the two men depicted in this print exemplify the concepts of ruse and trust or confidence as opposing aspects of comradeship or loyalty.
Binding
Plate loosely housed with other works by Gavarni in 1/2 calf binding, lettered "Gavarni" in gold on the spine; with the bookplate of Michael Sadleir.
