"Engraved and printed by Edmund Evans"--T.p. verso.
Lacking edition statement at head of title. According to Williams, Madan & Green, this is the 1st edition, 4th issue: "4th [cheap] issue (1897) ... in 1897 the remaining sets of sheets were made-up with priced titles, overprinted: "Price one shilling" with an ornamental bar over [i.e., covering up] the earlier price [of three shillings]; these have white endpapers."
Dedication hidden in the dedicatory verse 'A Nursery Darling'; the second letters of each line spell the name Marie Van der Gucht.
According to Williams, Madan and Green, probably one of 12 trial issues printed in brown, with color illustrations.
Cover illustrations by E. Gertrude Thomson; text block illustrations by Tenniel.
Note from bookseller on page facing half-title page: "Unique copy of the pre-print edition dated 1889, varying from [Sydney H.] Williams' descriptive bibliography." This statement refers to Williams's 1924 A bibliography of the writings of Lewis Carroll, which only describes one instance of the Nursery "Alice" which is a People's edition and includes the price of 2 shillings (cf. Williams, no. 57, p. 69). Williams, Madan and Green offer a probable description in the 1979 Lewis Carroll Handbook.
Preface dated Eastertide, 1889.
Includes "An Easter greeting to every child who loves 'Alice'", "Christmas greetings (from a fairy to a child)", and publisher's advertisements in the unnumbered pages following main sequence.
Housed in red cloth folder inside red cloth and 1/4 red morocco slipcase.
