Printed in black and hand-colored by the artist in four hues of wash; trimmed to the edges of the impression and mounted on cream board; signed in pen and ink, as called for, on the lower left of board: W. Nicholson.
An Alphabet was published in October, 1897, post-dated to 1898 (cf. Campbell).

From one of 10 sets of the edition de luxe reserved for the publisher, William Heinemann, in 1897; acquired with the Heinemann archive by Octopus Publishing in 1986, which passed to Reed Elsevier in 1987; sold in 1992 to Hilary Gerrish.
