Plate 9 signed "J. Mérigot" and dated 1788. Usually attributed to J. Mérigot on that basis, although Barbier, Wiebenson and other sources assign the text to Louis Stanislas Cécile Xavier de Girardin (1762-1827), son of René Louis de Girardin (1735-1808). The attribution to Girardin is doubtful because he was only the sixteen years old at the time, and the author claims to have already traveled in England. It is possible that the publishers hired a journeyman writer to compose the text on the basis of information furnished by the Girardin family and the tour guides ("conducteurs"). The gardens were created by René Louis, marquis de Girardin.

Library's copy has variant t.p. evidently produced for copies of the special issue(s), lacking the price, with a small vignette of a "ruin" flanked by two trees, and Mérigot père alone identified as bookseller in the imprint.
