Notes
Attributed to Francis Barlow by Nathan J.B. Flis (personal communication, 1/23/17): "The handling of the gray wash on the body of the devil is completely characteristic, as is the line work throughout. For example, the devil compares well with one in a design for one of the "Popish Plot" playing cards (British Museum acc. no. 1954,0710.4.20)."
Mounted as item 97 into an album of collected prints, broadsides, drawings, and miscellaneous single sheet items, assembled by former owner Joseph Ames and entitled "Emblematical and satirical prints on persons and professions" (PML 145850).
