Engraved block after Bewick's design for The Ass used in Quadrupeds, probably engraved by an apprentice.
Part of the collection of 94 wood-engraved blocks by Bewick and pupils under his supervision for History of Quadrupeds, inherited by his daughters when the workshop closed in 1849: "an odd assortment, a great number being laterally reversed and clumsily stiff apprentice copies of quadrupeds and tail-pieces" (cf. Bain).
