"In 1824, the Duke of Orléans decided to have his collection of contemporary paintings reproduced in a series of lithographs, and launched an appeal for subscriptions. The series, published under the title 'Galerie lithographiée de son altesse Royale Monseigneur le Duc d'Orléans, dédiée à son altesse Royale Madame la Duchesse d'Orléans' included about 200 lithographs and was published by Jean Vatout (the Duke's secretary) and J.P. Quenot in two volumes, one issued in 1825, the other one in 1829. The series was created as a limited edition: in addition to the subscriptions (487), few extra copies were printed, and the advertisement announcing the set claimed the stones were to be destroyed after printing."--Curatorial commentary, British Museum catalog.
