Notes
Letterpress t.p. and "List of the engravings" followed by proof impressions of the 56 steel engraved vignettes from Samuel Rogers's Italy : a poem (London : T. Cadell, 1830), printed here independent from the text of Rogers's' poem as full page plates, preserving the platemarks.
Each engraving has imprint, variously dated 1829 or 1830.
Engravings by Edward Goodall, Robert Wallis, William Raymond Smith, W. Finden, Henry Le Keux, W. Cooke (probably William Bernard Cooke), Daniel Allen, Charles Rolls, Frederick Christian Lewis, John Henry Robinson, William Humphrys, John Pye, and Samuel Davenport, after J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Stothard, Samuel Prout, John Flaxman, and Col. Batty (i.e. Captain Robert Batty), and of works by Titian, Giorgio Vasari, and Jacques Callot.
Some plates have printer's imprint of either "Triggs" or "McQueen".
Printed label on cover of original portfolio lists the various issues: Proofs Imperial 4to; India proofs with the letters, Columbier 4to; India proofs before the letters, Columbier 4to; and Proofs before the letters, Columbier 4to. The prices of the issues are given as, respectively: 2/12/6; 3/13/6; 4/4/0; and 4/4/0. The label in each case indicates at head which issue the portfolio belongs to.
Library's copy contains the proofs before letters on plain paper; bound in 1/2 morocco and lacking the original portfolio with the label identifying the various issues.
