Originally issued in parts 1823-1827, under the title "The rivers of England"; 21 of a projected series of 36 plates were initially engraved for the work, with 3 of the plates being cancelled before publication and the final published work ultimately issued with a total of 18 plates, as recorded in the printed list of plates at the beginning of the volume. Cf Rawlinson.
Plates 7, 9, 14 by Girtin, the others by Turner.
Library's copy is an imperial quarto copy, with the mezzotints in the first published state on india paper; with two of the three cancelled plates present, including Girtin's "Ripon Minster on the Rivers Ure and Skell" (numbered "Rivers of England, plate 12", and dated "March 1st, 1825"), and Turner's "Totness on the River Dart" (numbered "Rivers of England, plate 11", and dated "March 1st, 1825").
