Originally issued in parts between 1829 and 1831; despite the volume's designation as "Series the first" on the t.p., it actually followed the publication of Shepherd's companion volume, "Metropolitan improvements, or, London in the nineteenth century", which appeared in parts between 1827 and 1829. Illustrated with 190 individual steel engravings printed on 80 leaves, the engravings executed by J. Tingle, S. Lacey, W. Wallis, W. and J. Henshall, T. Barber, W. Watkins, R. Acon, J.B. Allen, A. Cruse, J. Hinchliff, and others, after drawings by T.H. Shepherd.
