Electrotype from an engraved block after Doré, with a design for an illustration for Gargantua et Pantagruel, originally created for Doré's 1873 illustrated edition of the collected works of François Rabelais (Oeuvres. Paris : Garnier Frères, 1873, v. 1, p. 389); this electrotype employed for a later edition of Rabelais (Paris : Garnier Frères, [ca. 1880]) issued by the same publisher, with the Doré illustrations, but in a smaller format, with the plates cut down and the designs cropped to fit the reduced dimensions.
Electrotype inscribed on the reverse with the number "432".
Engraved design shows a robed figure tossing Panurge's heart on a frying pan over an open hearth, while two devil characters with horns, wings and tails observe, and a chubby baby with a long tail plays with a doll on a string.
