Electrotype from an engraved block after Doré, with a design for an illustration for Gargantua et Pantagruel, orginally created for Doré's 1873 illustrated edition of the collected works of François Rabelais (Oeuvres. Paris : Garnier Frères, 1873, v. 1, p. 164); this electrotype employed for a later edition of Rabelais (Paris : Garnier Frères, [ca. 1880]) issued by the same publisher, with the Doré illustrations, but in a smaller format, with the plates cut down and the designs cropped to fit the reduced dimensions.

Summary
Engraved design shows an androgynous robed figure wearing a liberty cap sitting in front of a large book with the words "Concordia" and "Justica" written across the tops of the pages; a gargoyle-like creature with a long curly tail sits belly up at the feet of the figure.
