Engraved block, executed by Félix Jean Gauchard after Doré, with a rejected design for a headpiece illustration for chapter 6 of Gargantua et Pantagruel in an illustrated edition of the collected works of François Rabelais (Oeuvres. Paris : Garnier Frères, 1873).
Engraving created for Doré's 1873 edition of Rabelais, in which the artist expanded upon his work for the earlier 1854 edition with some 580 additional illustrations. This design was rejected by Dore after viewing a proof from the block, and hence has never been published.
Housed in 1/4 red morocco clamshell box 19 x 19.2 cm.

Summary
Engraved design shows Gargamelle, the soon-to-be mother of Gargantua, supported on the arm of her spouse and reeling from the aftereffects of a prodigious dinner of tripes, while other revellers continue to enjoy themselves with wine and music at right.
