Notes
Title from typed list of contents accompanying PML 55623; publication information from Miller.
Library's set consists of 26 of the 30 individual prints corresponding to the set of plates listed in the publisher Antonio Lafrery's stocklist as "Libri di Cornice Capitelli et Basi cauato dalle uestigie de gli Antichi ...."; with the library's missing plates corresponding to nos. 27-30 in the Lefrery volume as described by Miller in catalogue 55a. An additional plate, plate number 76, is not included among the original set of prints in Lafrery, but is described as one of a larger set of 35 plates held by the British Museum (168* b.3), which consists of the 30 plates in Lafrery along with 5 additional subjects, of which PML 55623, plate 76, is one. Cf. Miller and British Museum catalog (1904,0822.1.21) for further details.
"The disparity between the various groups of plates that make up this set strongly suggests that they were not produced together as part of a carefully thought-out programme, but rather that they are the result of a merging by Lafrery of plates he acquired from a number of sources ..."--Miller, p. 185.
Ten of the prints are signed by the monogrammist P.S. and bear lettering indicating that they depict examples of the Corinthian order; another ten of the prints are signed by the G.A. with the Caltrop, and include examples of the Composite, Corinthian, and Ionic order; the remaining six plates are unsigned.
Plates signed by the monogrammist P.S. formerly attributed to French engraver and etcher Jacques Prévost. Cf. Miller.
Comprises plates 70-82 of an album of 16th century Italian engravings entitled, "Architettura del Barozzio" (see PML 55623).
