Notes
Date on t.p. predates that of the publisher's 1st ed. as recorded by Sadleir and others; it is possible that it represents a remaindered or initially rejected state, with an early cancelled t.p. announcing the inclusion of illustrations by Walter J. Allen which did not ultimately appear in publication.
Volume contains no illustrations; contemporary publisher's advertisements from 1879 and 1880 describe the volume as illustrated by Walter J. Allen, but no editions of Reid's novel with illustrations by Allen appear to have been recorded for these or subsequent years, and it is likely that the planned illustrations were never completed by the artist or, if executed, remained unpublished.
Issued in publisher's cloth binding with two other volumes and no collective t.p., the spine reading: Mayne Reid's The queen of the lakes and other tales of adventure 3 Vols in 1. 31/6 London.
