According to Jefferson records at Monticello, this book may have been part of Jefferson's petit format library from Poplar Forest, later owned by his grandson, Francis Eppes, but there are no records of such a transfer. The Jefferson name inscribed on the inner cover is probably in the hand of Eppes. Although the book does not bear Jefferson's ownership marks, it may have been purchased in Europe sometime between 1784 and 1789, paying "3 livre tournois plus binding" as recorded in his 1789 catalogue, and perhaps given to a family member on his return. It was not sold to the Library of Congress in 1815. Because it was presented to Otey in 1841, it does not appear in the Levitt sale catalogue of 1873 when Eppes sold the Poplar Forest Library in New York City.
