Binding
Panel-stamped calf, gilt and painted, with the arms of Christian I, Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg on front board and portrait of Luther on back board, round stamp portraint of Melanchthon at top of front and rear; gilt and gauffered edges; metal cornerpieces; evidence of metal clasps. Stamps of Justice and Lucretia at bottom of both boards attributed to Pommerania (see EBDB w007397). Front pastedown includes several colored engravings of Virtues conquering Vices by Jan Sadeler after Maerten de Vos of Maiestas, Sapientia, and Iustitia (see Hollstein Dutch & Flemish XXI: 171 (nos. 536-538) and panel stamps of Luther (as on rear board), Melanchthon, armorial of Anhalt-Bernurg (as on front board), and unidentified armorial embossed on paper.
