Fifty-five etchings were produced by Bartoli in 1677 under the patronage of Cardinal Camillo Massimi; see Allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon, article on Bartoli. The images derive chiefly from illuminations in Codex Vergilius Vaticanus (Cod. Vat. Lat. 3225), with six from Codex Vergilius Romanus (Cod. Vat. Lat. 3867).
The six etchings from the Codex Vergilius Romanus are based on copies of the illustrations made for the paper museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo; see David H. Wright, The Roman Vergil (2001), p. 68.
