Album of 100 b&w and 60 hand colored etchings and aquatints by London printer, illustrator, and print publisher John Lewis Marks. The collected prints include several theatrical portraits, Biblical and religious subjects, caricatures, and popular subjects, including depictions of Napoleon crossing the Alps and engaged in the battle of the Bridge of Lodi, a pair of prints entitled "Temperance and happiness" (colored and uncolored impressions) and "Intemperance and misery," scenes of smugglers, brigands, and poachers; two views of Brighton; colored and uncolored impressions of prints entitled "The sailor at home," "The sailor abroad," "The fortunate sailor," "The unfortunate sailor," "The pressgang," and "At sea"; and colored and uncolored impressions of a print entitled "The sailor's return." Many prints appear to have been offered for sale individually, with some evidently belonging to published series or sets, such as Marks's theatrical portraits, Marks's favorite portraits, Marks's miniature portraits, Marks's new equestrian characters, Pen & ink sketches, and prints 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12 from a published set of plates entitled: The boys own caricatures, or, Innocent recreations for youth. Also of note is the inclusion of 4 folded plates with illustrations framing a central panel intended for the display of student penmanship, with one plate completed with a mounted specimen of handwriting.
