Cream-colored cotton printed in black.
Late 19th century, probably American. This is the most common ABC instructional handkerchief, which is described in the "1897 Sears, Roebuck Catalogue". It has a large blackboard in the center with the alphabet in upper and lower cases and numbers from 1 to 0 centered within the frame. Images of children at play and at school around edges. The handkerchief was produced in at least three different color versions: blue, black, and red.
