Notes
Date from d'Allemagne.
The game board consists of a hand-colored, engraved sheet. Sixty-three numbered squares are arranged in two concentric, counter-clockwise tracks which lead to a circular center with the rules of the game. Many spaces simply contain a number. On twenty-two of the squares are grotesque portraits of men and women, such as Dames Mecette, Ragonde, Tassame, and Paquette, as well as genre scenes. The last square depicts male children sitting around a table, eating and drinking. In the corners are images of game pieces, dice, and a bag and dice cup.
The game is associated with a ballet, La Mère Gigogne. It was performed at the beginning of the Seventeenth Century at the Saint Germain Fair by the company, La troupe des Enfants Sans Soucy, which was known for preforming farces in the common taste of the villagers.
