Copy B.
Printing dated by Viscomi to about 1795.
Eighteen plates on 18 leaves.
Relief etchings, uncolored.
Leaf size: 37 x 26 cm.
Five leaves watermarked 1794.
Plates 4 and 9 have been identified by scholars as forgeries: photolithographic facsimiles, probably executed between 1874 and 1878 by A. G. Dew-Smith. They are on different paper and are tipped in, rather than bound in (Cf. Viscomi's Two Fake Blakes).
For detailed provenance comments see Bentley, p. 100.
Small pencil sketches on the verso of plates 2, 8, 17. Bentley speculates that these may be by Tatham.

Acquired from Blake by Charles Heathcote Tatham in Oct. 1799; apparently Mary Taylor (ink inscription, "Mary Taylor London," and a small drawing of a branch or vine on the verso of Object 1); possibly the copy sold from the collection of Edward Vernon Utterson, Sotheby's, 5 July 1852, lot 251 to [James?] Holmes; perhaps the copy sold at a Puttick & Simpson auction, London, 25 May 1854, lot 95; sold in 1874 for £18 (according to Sotheby's 1878 catalogue); Albert George Dew-Smith; sold from Dew-Smith's collection, Sotheby's, 29 Jan. 1878, lot 247, to John Pearson; Thomas Gaisford; sold from Gaisford's collection, Sotheby's, 23 April 1890, lot 189 to Bernard Quaritch; offered by Quaritch in his "Rough List" 104 of May 1890, item 460; acquired by Bernard Buchanan Macgeorge no later than 1892; sold from Macgeorge's collection, Sotheby's, 1 July 1924, lot 114 to Maggs Bros.; acquired by George C. Smith no later than 1927; sold from Smith's collection, Parke-Bernet, 2 Nov. 1938, lot 22 to A. S. W. Rosenbach, probably acting for Mrs. Landon K. Thorne; given by Thorne to the Morgan in 1973.
