"This is a rare example of AKA-hon (orange colored booklets), a type of primitive children's book that flourished in the early 18th century. Where these books were customarily 4 1/2 by 6 inches in size, the present example is in miniature format; and moreover, it was issued not as a tiny story book , but as a type of miniature 'calendar' - with the calendrical notations cited in the text above the main illustration. The cover print shows the mouse bride and groom; and the single double-page illustration depicts the bridal procession. Dated Kyoho XVI (1731), the year of the mouse. Interestingly enough, the case for the booklet has also mounted on the inside of the case two miniature color prints ca. (1850's) showing mice in human garb"--J.P. Wightman card file.
