Engraved title page and dedication leaf followed by 192 plates dated 1786-1792 comprising oval medallion portraits of illustrious French men and women with engraved captions, alternating with half-page scenes of their actions and deeds with long engraved legends printed in double column beneath the captions.
Dedication signed: Pierre Blin.
Aquatints with line and stipple (some plates possibly touched with a rocker) printed in color from multiple plates, executed by Sergent, his wife "Mme de Cernel", J. Morret, Ridé, L. Roger and Le Coeur, after designs by Sergent (about 138), Desfontaines, Naigeon, Le Barbier, Bénard, F. Gérard and Duplessis-Berteaux.
