Impressions in pale grey ink on vellum, of plates nos. 147-239, 260-319, painted in watercolor by Henri Joseph and Pierre Joseph Redouté, signed either in manuscript or stencil. The signatures of the engravers have been effaced. The uncolored frontispiece, designed and engraved by Sebastien le Clerc, shows Louis XIV accompanied by M. de Colbert visiting his Cabinet d'histoire naturelle. This engraving first appeared in 1671 as the frontispiece to Mémoires pour servir a l'histoire naturelle des animaux (Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1671).
