Kokan (or Shun) Shiba was a Western-style painter and thinker of the late Edo period, published the first Japanese copperplate printed map of the world, Do Oban chikyu O zensu in 1792. The Oranda tensetsu is Shiba's commentary to his Tenkyu O zenzu, published in 1795. Based on the Copernican theory, the work discusses the motions of the sun and the planets, solar and lunar eclipses, sunspots, etc.
