Cover title.
Portfolio of woodcuts created to illustrate Virgil's Georgica, including impressions of full-page and textual illustrations here printed without text; issued in a limited edition of 100 to accompany volumes of: Les Georgiques / Virgile ; texte latin et version française de l'abbé Jacques Delille ; gravés sur bois d'Aristide Maillol. Paris : Philippe Gonin, 1937-1943 [i.e. 1950] (see PML 141518-19).
"In 1908, returning from Greece with Kessler, Maillol stopped at Naples and Pompeii and executed a few drawings. Shortly thereafter he cut the first block for the Georgica and was able to save it from a fire in 1915 which destroyed his Montval studio. In the following years he made a few other cuts for this volume, which Kessler was unable to complete as a companion to the Eclogae [The Artist & the Book 172]. In 1937 Gonin urged Maillol to resume his work, and the last block was delivered to the publisher in September, 1944, shortly before the artist's death. Most of the cuts were executed by craftsmen after Maillol's drawings on the block, since at that time his eyes were not strong enough for the cutting"--The Artist and the Book.
No. 60 of 100, including one set of Maillol's woodcuts printed in black, one in sanguine, and ten preliminary proofs in sanguine printed on chine.
Each printed sheet, including the printed wrappers, has the artist's 'M' stamped in red ink (in black on the 10 proofs on chine) as well as the limitation number (60/100) in pencil.
Printed on wove paper with two watermarks of Maillol nudes (one with no lettering and the other with 'Maillol Gonin').
